When people think about running, they often imagine marathons or long, exhausting runs that feel impossible to achieve. But at Fitmums and Friends, we believe the real magic starts with something much simpler — just one mile.

Whether you run it, jog it, or walk it, one mile is a powerful first step toward better fitness, confidence, and wellbeing.

Why One Mile Matters

You might be surprised at just how much benefit you can gain from covering just one mile.

  • Improved heart health: Studies show that even short bouts of exercise — as little as 10–15 minutes — can significantly lower the risk of heart disease and boost cardiovascular fitness.
  • Better mood and reduced stress: A single mile of walking or running helps release endorphins, often called “happy hormones,” that lift your mood and reduce anxiety.
  • A sense of achievement: One mile is far enough to challenge you, but short enough to feel achievable. Every time you complete it, you’re proving to yourself that you can do it — and that’s an incredibly empowering feeling.

And the best part? You don’t need to do it alone.

Support Every Step of the Way

At Fitmums and Friends, every one of our 11 clubs offers a 1-mile option at every session — alongside most Clubs offering 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6-mile routes as well. That means you can choose the distance that feels right for you on any given day.

You’ll be guided by trained Run Leaders who specialise in supporting beginners, and surrounded by a friendly, encouraging group of people who remember exactly what it was like to take that first step. Many of our members started with the 1-mile option — some walking, some jogging, all learning that progress comes one step at a time.

A Fresh Start After Weight Loss

If you’ve recently lost weight, you might feel nervous about getting active again — especially if past exercise experiences were uncomfortable or discouraging. But now, with your body feeling lighter and stronger, this is the perfect time to rediscover what movement can feel like.

At Fitmums and Friends, we understand those worries. We’ll support you at your pace — no pressure, no judgement, and plenty of encouragement. You’ll find that moving, even for one mile, feels better than you ever imagined.
