Have you experienced harassment while being active outdoors?

Posted 17th April 2025

Harassment whilst running, walking and exercising outdoors can leave people feeling feel scared and intimidated. As a result this can affect the way people exercise resulting in people looking for alternative routes or changing the times they go out to avoid cat calling, offensive comments and, occasionally, physical harassment. Sometimes the affect of harassment can be that people stop exercising outdoors altogether.

Very few people report incidents and have accepted it as the norm and not reported it to the police, as they don't feel it would be taken seriously. But the police do want people to report these incidents. Unreported harassment means that both the police and the local councils are not able to understand the scale of the issue.

We are working with Humberside Police to create an awareness campaign to challenge the behaviour towards runners and those being active outdoors as well as to empower people to know what to do in the event of experiencing harassment. To help us understand the extent of the problem we have created a survey to determine how significant the issue of harassment is for runners and those exercising in public. We also want to understand the impact of experiencing abuse and how it affects people's ability to exercise outdoors.

Please complete the survey below – this is open to anyone who exercises in public (not just runners) so please share your experiences with us whatever your chosen activity is.

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey, please share with anybody else you think may wish to contribute.
