Launch of children's bereavement animation

Posted 17th May 2025

A moving new animation created for The Forest Project premiered at Hull Truck Theatre on Friday 16th & Saturday 17th May 2025. The animation gives a powerful glimpse into how the project supports bereaved children and young people through nature, stories, and safe, supportive conversations.

The animation has been made using words and art work created by the children who have attended the Forest Project revealing their feelings about managing grief

The animation was made possible thanks to funding from The Ideas Fund, and was brought to life by award-winning animation director Bruna Martini. Based in Brighton, Bruna has over 15 years’ experience creating animated films for children’s charities – bringing a warm, thoughtful touch that perfectly captures the spirit of the project.

Facilitated by Fitmums & Friends, The Forest Project uses forest-based activities – like den building, campfire cooking, rope work and tree climbing – to create space for children and young people to explore their grief and build emotional resilience.  It’s not traditional counselling. It’s not classrooms or clinics. It’s wellies, woodland, and wise words, gently woven into play.

“I get to be with my friends who understand how I feel,” said one young participant.

“Doing the activities has helped,” said another.

The animation shows how the project works, what it offers, and – most importantly – how it feels to be part of it. It’s designed to raise awareness and help more families and professionals understand what support is available in Hull and East Yorkshire.

“We wanted to create something that shows how powerful nature, connection, and simple activities can be when it comes to processing grief,” said Heather, Bereavement Co-ordinator at Fitmums & Friends. “Children and young people need space to feel, express, and just be – the forest gives them that.”

The animation is now available below

Fitmums & Friends hopes it will encourage more referrals, more conversations, and more young people getting the support they need, when they need it.
