Maternal Mental Health Week - Lucie's story

Posted 30th April 2018

Beverley Fitmums & Friends member Lucie has an inspiring story of grit & determination....

I have always suffered from low mood, and always enjoyed exercising (at my own pace,I've never been very good!). But after the birth of my first child, nearly 7 years ago, I hit absolute rock bottom - severe postnatal depression coupled with moving to a new city where I knew nobody and had no support left me very vulnerable and unable to enjoy anything I had done previously, including running. Sadly let down by professionals, it took until my son was 2.5 years old before I began to exercise again, taking up and finding a love once again for, running. I heard of Fitmums through a friend, but didn't dare run with anyone else. An unfortunate, inconsiderate comment aimed at me in 2014 ended my running again and I swore never to have anything to do with runners again.

Fast forward to 2017 and, pregnant with my second child and already part of the Fitmums & Friends family with my son a proud junior member of Cottingham FMJs, I resolved to give running another go once my baby arrived. Suffering once again from postnatal depression, I joined Beverley Fitmums in January, and the support that I have received ever since is unbelievable. Without them I have no doubt that my situation would be very different - not just the weekly exercise, but the support of people who really care and want to support one another no matter what, has been the difference between my experience this time and last.

If you think being more active might help you experience improved mental health and well-being then please come along to any Fitmums & Friends session.
