Together in Grief – The Forest Project, Lexi’s experience

Posted 22nd November 2024

Lexi volunteers with our Together in Grief – The Forest Project which supports children and young people, like herself, who have experienced the death of a loved one. Read on to learn how the project helps her and others like her to explore and express their grief.

“I was fortunate enough to take part in Together in Grief – The Forest Project in March 2023 after losing my auntie to suicide. The forest leaders along with the bereavement support facilitators were incredibly supportive and approachable. On my particular project, the majority of the children were a little younger, however I met Emily who is a volunteer and now a good friend. I was able to talk about my feelings, seek advice and confide free from judgement with all of the leaders but especially Emily.

“Undoubtedly, speaking openly (in the beautiful setting of the forest) and listening to the other participants' different experiences with grief helps. One story that stood out particularly for me was of a young boy who lost his mum; it reminded me of my cousin who lost his mum at a similar age. In moments such as these, despite the sadness, it was healing; it was a quiet and open space to share your feelings and talk about them. I learnt through participating in the forest project the importance of simply just talking.

“A highlight for me in the forest was the garlic bread that we cooked on the fire. We picked wild garlic from the forest, the forest leaders brought dough, and we cooked garlic bread. The nature factor of The Forest Project is a crucial one as it has such calming benefits.

“On a catch up session at Hull University recently, I was inspired during a chat with Sam, the inspirational founder of Fitmums & Friends, to become a volunteer. I am currently taking part in my first project as a volunteer and am thoroughly enjoying it. Although the main focus is the children, I have also found volunteering very healing. It is so nice to be a part of such an amazing organisation which is committed to helping children in times of grief. I have felt the sense of community; everyone has an unique understanding and compassion. Last week was memories week: each person goes around the camp fire and shares their favourite memory of their late loved one. This is highly valuable as people explain common things that remind them of their loved ones, such as music, and how these triggers can be positive but can also cause sadness, and how it is okay to feel whichever way.

“Undeniably, The Forest Project has taught me the importance of talking about emotions, especially in times of grief; it has helped me to feel less alone and to recognise the benefits of nature and fresh air. This incredible programme helps so many children – I can’t wait to further my involvement in this amazing organisation.”
