Together in Grief - The Forest Project is an innovative Fitmums and Friends programme which offers support for bereaved children. It combines the therapeutic effects of being in a forest environment with opportunities to help children and young people explore their grief and loss. The first programme completed in January 2022 - read on to learn about how the children involved found their experience in the forest.
Studies show that mental and physical wellbeing can be improved by being in nature, with a positive impact on boosting the immune system and reducing anxiety and depression. We felt it was an ideal setting to create support for bereaved children and young people. Funding from The Ideas Fund has enabled us to test out this theory.
The aim of The Forest Project is to improve children and young people's mental and physical wellbeing in the process of managing grief, and potentially create connections with peers, offering longer-term support beyond the lifespan of this project.
The programme runs over 4 weeks (consecutive Saturdays) with places for 10 children at each programme. The closed group allows friendships and trust to develop.
Sessions are delivered by trained Forest School Leaders who lead the practical activities. These can include den building, wood carving, camp fire cooking, tool making, tree climbing, fire lighting and rope work. They provide a perfect focus for children who may find a traditional group discussion intimidating.
Interwoven into the practical element are discussions and activities supported by Bereavement Support Facilitators who offer therapeutic support.
The first Forest Project programme completed in January 2022. We asked the children to tell us how they found their experience in the forest. This short film shows some of the impact of being involved in this project.
