We are excited to launch a brand-new programme focused on supporting people who have experienced breast cancer through the power of dragon boating—and we’re looking for volunteer Helms to help make it happen.
What is a dragon boat Helm?
A Helm is a key figure in any dragon boat crew. Positioned at the rear of the boat, the Helm is responsible for steering, safety, and overall control on the water. Using a long steering oar, they guide the boat’s direction while working closely with the crew and coach.
But the role goes far beyond steering.
A great Helm:
• Ensures the safety of all on board
• Communicates clearly and calmly
• Supports the rhythm and coordination of the team of paddlers
• Builds confidence and trust, especially with less experienced paddlers
In essence, the Helm plays a vital leadership role, helping create a positive, safe, and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
About the programme
We are developing a supportive and inclusive dragon boat training programme specifically for people who have experienced breast cancer. These sessions aim to promote physical recovery, mental wellbeing, and community connection in a safe and encouraging environment.
Location: Welton Waters Adventure Centre
Start Date: May/June 2026
Session Times: Saturdays, 11:00am – 12:30pm (Volunteers will need to attend from 10.30am)
Frequency: Two sessions per month
We understand that volunteers have other commitments, so there is no requirement to attend every session—even helping once per month would make a meaningful difference.
Who we’re looking for
We are seeking volunteers who:
• Are confident communicators and team-oriented
• Can provide reassurance and encouragement to participants
• Are sensitive to the needs of people who have experienced breast cancer, who may feel anxious or uncertain
• Have an interest in water sports or community wellbeing (previous experience is helpful but not essential)
Empathy, patience, and a calm presence are just as important as technical skills.
Training provided
All volunteer Helms will be supported through the ICDBA Level 1 Helm Course, which includes both theory and practical learning.
Dates: Sat 9th & Sun 10th May 2026
Time: 9:00am – 5:00pm (both days)
Location: Welton Waters Adventure Centre
What’s Included:
o Classroom-based learning
o On-water practical sessions
o Essential safety training, including capsize drills
The cost of the course will be fully covered. While not required, a voluntary donation towards training costs would be welcomed.
Get involved
This is a unique opportunity to:
• Learn a new and rewarding skill
• Support a meaningful community programme
• Make a genuine impact on people’s recovery and wellbeing
Together, we can help create a supportive and empowering experience on the water.
