At Fitmums & Friends, we are fortunate to have a fabulous coaching team of coaches, assistant coaches and athletics leaders who motivate and support our members. This includes a team of teen athletics leaders who work with our junior athletes in Beverley and Hull.
We asked them to tell us a little about themselves and about being an Athletics Leader...
Cecily, 14, has been coming along to Fitmums & Friends Juniors since the age of five – for almost 10 years! This year, Ceci became an Athletics Leader at our FMJs and 10 to Teens sessions in North Hull.
What made you decide to become an Athletics Leader?
“I volunteered during 2021 as part of my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. I really enjoyed it and wanted to continue, so when the Leading Athletics workshop was offered, I jumped at the chance. I am hoping to complete the Coaching Assistant course when I am 16.”
What do you love about the role?
“I enjoy helping the athletes to be organised and learning to teach them new skills. I like to help the instructors and aid the smooth running of the sessions. I feel it helps my confidence in leading.”
What would you say to someone who is interested but not quite sure about becoming part of our coaching team?
“Go for it! Do not hesitate. You will learn lots of new skills and increase your confidence. There is a wide range of ages in the coaching team and everyone is welcomed.”
Katie, 16, has also been a Fitmums & Friends junior athlete for almost 10 years. As an Athletics Leader, she helps at our sessions at Costello and in North Hull.
What made you decide to become an Athletics Leader?
“I decided to become an Athletics Leader because I think it’s important to encourage people to stay active and healthy, as this is beneficial for their physical and mental wellbeing.”
What do you love about the role?
“I love to see young people thrive and enjoy themselves, whilst inspiring them to advance their athletic abilities. I also develop a broad range of my own skills in the process.”
What would you say to someone who is interested but not quite sure about becoming part of our coaching team?
“Age isn’t a barrier – Fitmums & Friends has clubs for all ages and abilities, so it’s enjoyable and easy to get involved. Every volunteer plays the valuable role of supporting someone – no matter who they are – in their fitness journey, as well as taking care of each volunteer, to provoke a happy, healthy and kind community.”
Sam, 15, started attending our junior sessions in North Hull and at Costello around five years ago. He now helps as an Athletics Leader at our 10 to Teens session in North Hull.
What made you decide to become an Athletics Leader?
“I decided to become an Athletics Leader as I hoped the role would allow me to learn new skills and boost my self-confidence.”
What do you love about the role?
“I enjoy helping out the coaches, I am learning all the time, but I am also experienced enough to be able to pass on my knowledge as a long-term member to help out younger and less-experienced members.”
What would you say to someone who is interested but not quite sure about becoming part of our coaching team?
“I would say that this role has given me a sense of achievement and personal satisfaction from watching members take on board my advice and become better athletes. My confidence has improved and I have got as much out of it as I have put into becoming an Athletics Leader.”
A huge thank you to our teen Athletics Leaders who are valuable members of our coaching team and much appreciated by our junior athletes. They are a brilliant bunch! If you are aged 14+ and would like to join them, please chat with Coach Sam at a session, by email at info@fitmums.org.uk, or by calling 07870 654586.
