Dragon Boat Programme for Breast Cancer

Paddle together. Recover together. Find your strength.

Our Dragon Boat Programme offers free, supportive and enjoyable dragon boat sessions for men and women affected by breast cancer.  Based at Welton Waters, the programme provides an opportunity to be active, spend time outdoors, meet others with shared experiences and discover the physical and emotional benefits of paddling together.  Whether you're completely new to dragon boating or have paddled before, you're very welcome.

Why dragon boating?

Being physically active can play an important role in recovery following breast cancer treatment.  Dragon boat paddling provides a whole-body activity that can help develop strength, mobility and fitness. The repetitive paddling movement can also support lymphatic flow and upper-body movement, while being active outdoors can have positive benefits for mood and wellbeing.  But the benefits go beyond the physical.

Getting out on the water, being part of a team and sharing an experience with others can help build confidence, reduce isolation and create a sense of connection. There is something powerful about sitting together in a boat, paddling in rhythm and working towards the same goal.

And, of course, it's great fun!

Free sessions twice a month

We offer dragon boat sessions twice a month, giving you regular opportunities to get on the water and enjoy being active with others.

  • Welton Waters Sailing Club
  • Saturdays 11am–1pm

The sessions are free to attend, thanks to funding from City Healthcare Partnership and Trinity House.  Places must be booked in advance.  Feel free to bring a friend/family member with you - we cannot guarantee there will be space in the boat but if it is possible we will try and include them.  Places will always be prioritised for those recovering from breast cancer.

Before taking part, if you are currently in follow up from treatment you will need to check with your healthcare professional that you are able to participate in the activity.

What happens at a session?

You don't need any previous dragon boat experience. Our trained volunteers will support you throughout the session.

When you arrive, look out for our Welcome Paddle and we'll help you find your way to the session.

A typical session includes:

  • Life jackets – we'll make sure you're safely fitted with your buoyancy aid.
  • Safety briefing – you'll be given all the information you need to enjoy the session safely.
  • Warm-up – we'll get your body ready for paddling.
  • Paddle instruction – our team will show you how to use the paddle and explain the basics of dragon boating.
  • Time on the water – then it's time to get out on the water! You'll paddle together as a crew, with our trained Helms guiding the boat.
  • Fun and games – sometimes our boats might even have a friendly race!
  • Cuppa and chat – after getting off the water, we'll come together for a drink, a chat and a chance to get to know each other.

You can take things at your own pace, and our team will be there to support you throughout.  Helms will explain how you can rest at any time should you need to when you are on the water.

Meet Hope and Harmony

Our two dragon boats are called Hope and Harmony – names chosen to reflect the spirit of the programme and what we hope people will experience when they take part.

The boats are managed by our team of trained volunteer Helms, who have undertaken specialist training to lead dragon boat sessions safely.

Our volunteer team is at the heart of the programme, helping to create a friendly and welcoming environment where everyone can feel part of the crew.

A partnership project

The Dragon Boat Programme is a partnership project delivered by Fitmums and Friends, Welton Waters Adventure Centre and HER Breast Friends.  The programme has been made possible thanks to funding from CHCP and Trinity House.

Together, we're working to create accessible opportunities for people affected by breast cancer to be active, connect with others and experience the benefits of being out on the water.

What to bring?

  • Please bring a spare set of clothes - just in case.  It is unlikely you will fall in the water but best to be prepared for all occasions and all weathers
  • Layers are best so that you can remove/add clothing as needed
  • Trainers or a closed toe water shoe are most appropriate
  • If you have to carry medication with you at all times e.g. asthma inhaler, GTN spray, epi pen - we can provide a waterproof bag for you to take this on the water with you
  • We provide vegan sweet on board the boat to help with energy levels - if this is not suitable for you, please bring your own snack
  • Water bottles can be taken on the boat so a good idea to bring one especially in warm conditions
  • Sun cream/hat is a must for those sunny days
  • On colder days make sure you have warm layers to put on after the session

Parking at the Sailing Club is limited, so we strongly encourage participants to car share wherever possible.  Please allow yourself plenty of time to arrive, park and get ready for the session.

Hope and Harmony are waiting for you
