Sight Loss Activity Programme

Physical activity sessions for people affected by sight loss

Move with confidence. Build strength. Be active together.

At Fitmums and Friends, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to be physically active, whatever their ability or circumstances. Our sessions for people affected by sight loss provide a friendly, supportive environment where you can get active, build strength and confidence, and enjoy being part of a group.

We deliver two regular sessions each week, working in partnership with Sight Support Hull and East Yorkshire.

The sessions are open to men and women aged 16 and over with sight impairment.

Workout Wednesday

Wednesdays: 11.15am at Warners, 80-86 Pickering Road, Hull HU4 6TE

Our Workout Wednesday session is a strength and conditioning session, delivered by a qualified Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Strength and Conditioning exercises can be particularly beneficial for people living with sight loss. Developing strength, balance, stability and body awareness can help support everyday movement and physical confidence.

The sessions are designed to help you:

  • Build strength and muscular fitness
  • Improve balance and stability
  • Develop co-ordination and body awareness
  • Support mobility and functional movement
  • Improve overall fitness
  • Build confidence in your physical abilities

Exercises can be adapted to suit different abilities and levels of fitness, with guidance from our coach throughout the session.

It's a great opportunity to work on your physical health in a supportive environment, alongside others who understand the challenges and benefits of being active with sight loss.

Friday Walk and Run

Fridays: Costello Stadium, Anlaby Park Road North, Hull HU4 6XQ

Our Friday session takes place at the athletics track at Costello Stadium, providing a safe and accessible environment for walking, running and movement activities.

Participants can choose to walk or run around the track, at a pace that works for them. For some people with sight loss, the clear lines around the athletics track provide useful visual and physical reference points, helping them to move around the track more independently.

For those who would benefit from additional support, we have volunteer Guides who can accompany participants and provide guidance as needed.

The session is about finding the right way for you to be active. You might walk, jog, run or combine all three. There's no pressure to go at a particular pace or distance.

More than walking and running

While our Friday sessions regularly involve walking and running, we also introduce different activities and challenges to keep things varied and interesting.

These might include:

  • Nordic walking
  • Movement skills and drills
  • Activities focusing on agility and co-ordination
  • Different running and walking challenges

These sessions provide an opportunity to try something new, develop physical skills and have fun while being active with others.

Active together

Physical activity can have benefits that go far beyond physical fitness.

Our sessions provide opportunities to meet other people, build confidence and enjoy being active as part of a supportive community.

Whether you're looking to improve your strength, maintain your fitness, become more active, try something new or simply enjoy some company while getting moving, you're welcome to join us.

We work in partnership with Sight Support Hull and East Yorkshire to help ensure that our sessions are accessible and supportive for people living with sight loss.

We'd love to hear from you.

Who can take part?

You don't need to be an experienced runner or fitness enthusiast. Our activities can be adapted to different levels of ability and fitness, and our friendly team will help you find an option that works for you.
