Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering Opportunities
There are lots of ways to be part of Fitmums and Friends. Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do.
From leading a run or walk to making the tea at a choir performance, from helping a child learn a new athletics skill to chatting to someone at an event about how Fitmums and Friends could support them – every volunteer makes a difference.
You don't have to be a runner. You don't have to be sporty. And you don't need lots of spare time.
There are lots of different ways to get involved, so you can find something that works for you.
Lead a run, walk or cycle
Our clubs are powered by volunteers, and we're always looking for people who would like to help others get active. You could become a Run, Walk, Nordic Walking or Cycle Leader at one of our community clubs, helping people of all abilities enjoy being active together.
There are also opportunities to support our specialist programmes, such as:
- Sessions for those affected by sight loss - become a Guide Runner/Walker
- Together in Grief – supporting people who have experienced bereavement through our walking sessions
- Menopause Activity Programmes – helping create welcoming and supportive activity opportunities
- Other specialist sessions designed to help people overcome barriers to being active
You'll receive the training and support you need, and you don't need to be an elite athlete. What matters most is your enthusiasm for helping other people. See more about what being a Leader is all about HERE
Join a coaching team
If you enjoy working with people and want to help others develop their skills, you could become part of one of our coaching teams. There are opportunities to get involved at different levels, from volunteer helpers and assistant coaches through to qualified coaches. You could support with junior or adult sessions.
Volunteering as a coach is a fantastic way to develop your own skills while helping others build confidence and achieve their goals.
Help behind the scenes
Not all volunteering happens in trainers! We also need people who can help with the things that happen behind the scenes to keep our charity running. Depending on your skills and interests, you might be able to help within the central team with admin work, or maybe at your local Club helping to get ready for sessions. Or maybe you could support with fundraising efforts. If you have a particular skill that you think could help Fitmums and Friends, we'd love to hear from you.
Help us spread the word
We regularly attend community events, health and wellbeing events, sports events and other local activities. You can volunteer to help us represent Fitmums and Friends, perhaps by helping to set up our stand, chatting to visitors and telling people about the activities and support we offer.
You don't need to know everything about the charity. We'll give you the information you need – and you'll have the chance to meet lots of new people and help connect them with opportunities that could make a real difference to their lives.
Get involved in events
Our events couldn't happen without volunteers!
You could help at our Farm Run 10k, our annual 1-Hour Club Challenge or one of our other fundraising and community events.
Roles might include:
- Helping with registration
- Marshalling
- Supporting participants
- Counting laps
- Handing out water or refreshments
- Helping with set-up and closing
- Welcoming people
- Providing general event support
You don't need to be able to run the event to be part of it!
Support our Dragon Boat Programme
Our Dragon Boat Programme provides opportunities for people affected by breast cancer to get active, connect with others and enjoy being out on the water.
There are a number of ways you can support the programme, from helping at sessions and events to becoming part of the wider volunteer team.
If you're interested in getting involved in dragon boating, there are also opportunities to train and develop specific skills within the programme.
Help at our Choir
Our Intergenerational Choir brings together children, adults and grandparents to sing, perform and raise money for Fitmums and Friends. There are lots of ways to help make our performances happen, even if you don't fancy taking to the stage!
You could volunteer to:
- Welcome people and take tickets at the door on performance night
- Help with refreshments
- Help with the raffle
- Support the organisation of the performance
- Help with setting up or clearing away
You don't have to be a singer to be part of our choir community!
Why volunteer?
Volunteering is a brilliant way to give something back – but it's also something you can gain a huge amount from.
Volunteering can help you:
- Meet new people and make friends
- Feel part of your local community
- Develop new skills and build confidence
- Gain valuable experience
- Improve your own wellbeing
- Stay active and connected
- Support something you believe in
- Make a genuine difference to other people's lives
Many of our volunteers tell us that they get as much from volunteering as the people they support.
You could be the person who makes the difference
Sometimes it's a small moment that matters.
It's the person who welcomes a nervous newcomer to their first session.
The volunteer who walks alongside someone who is grieving.
The coach who encourages a child to try something for the first time.
The person behind the charity stand who tells someone about a programme they didn't know existed.
The event volunteer who makes sure everyone feels welcome.
Every volunteer helps make Fitmums and Friends what it is.
Ready to get involved?
Whether you have an hour to spare occasionally, want to volunteer regularly or have a particular skill you'd like to share, we'd love to hear from you. All volunteers receive an induction to welcome them to their volunteer role.
There is a place for everyone at Fitmums and Friends – and we'd love you to be part of our team.
