Bringing menopause support into the workplace

Posted 7th April 2026

Workplaces across the UK are increasingly recognising the importance of supporting employees through all stages of life — and perimenopause/menopause is no exception. In response to growing demand, local charity Fitmums & Friends has expanded its highly successful Menopause Activity Programme into workplace settings.

Having delivered the programme extensively within community groups, the team is now working with employers to bring this supportive, evidence-based initiative directly into the working day.

After delivering a programme for Spencer Group, Yvonne Moir, HR Director explained;

“It is vitally important to the business that all of our employees, regardless of age or gender, feel fully supported in the workplace. It has been identified that many women struggle with menopause symptoms at work, to the extent that some even feel they cannot continue with their careers. At Spencer Group we want our colleagues to feel able to speak up when they need support and that confidence comes from peer support, education and knowing that the business will listen. Fitmums and Friends have provided some great resources, and we hope to continue working with them to support our colleagues.”

A proven programme, now tailored for workplaces

The programme has already helped many women better understand and manage their menopause journey. For workplaces, the programme can also be tailored to meet organisational needs — whether that’s fitting into lunch breaks, adjusting session length, or focusing on specific areas of interest. A typical workplace programme is 4 weeks to include all key elements as described below. Each session is around 1-hour to fit with workplace needs.

At its heart, the programme combines physical activity, expert guidance, and peer support — creating a safe, welcoming environment where women can feel understood and empowered. These sessions have been successfully delivered within workplace environments, including during lunch breaks, making them accessible and easy to attend.

What the programme includes

1. Guided walking sessions

Walking is a simple yet powerful way to support physical and mental wellbeing, particularly for women in midlife who may be new to exercise or returning after a break.

Our “walk and talk” sessions are led by trained Walk Leaders from Fitmums & Friends, with a strong emphasis on creating a friendly, inclusive atmosphere. These sessions provide valuable time for women to connect, share experiences, and support one another — something many participants describe as therapeutic and reassuring.

2. Expert medical session

A key highlight of the programme is an informative session delivered by a specialist GP or Consultant. Both professionals volunteer their time and bring a wealth of local experience.

These sessions provide clear, practical information on menopause symptoms and treatment options — helping women access knowledge that can often be difficult to obtain in everyday appointments. Participants consistently describe this as an invaluable part of the programme.

3. Strength and conditioning

Maintaining muscle mass and bone health is essential during midlife. This session focuses on simple, effective exercises that can be done at home — no gym membership or equipment required.

Participants learn key movement patterns that support long-term strength, balance, and overall health, helping them feel more confident in managing their physical wellbeing.

4. Yoga for wellbeing

To address the mental and emotional aspects of menopause, the programme also includes a yoga session designed to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

What participants say

Feedback from participants experiences of the programme reflect the unique ability to combine practical support with a strong sense of community.

A member of staff attending the Spencer Group programme told us...

“From attending the Menopause session, I found that getting together with colleagues and menopause specialists to discuss how we feel and what can be done to make this stage of life easier is very valuable. I now understand the importance of speaking up about my symptoms, taking time for self-care, and knowing I am not alone, that I am normal, which makes such a difference to my wellbeing.”

Feedback from previous attendees also highlights the real impact of the programme...

“A really worthwhile programme and very enjoyable. Great mix of activities all helping to support and understand menopause. Great to be with other women in the same situation and share experiences. Very well organised and loved the reminder and follow-up emails which gave a really added touch of support and care from Fitmums. Fabulous.”

“I feel more confident to go ask for help at the doctors. It's definitely improved my mental health and I’ve totally loved the walking and talking to other people in the same situations.”

Creating supportive workplace cultures

By bringing this programme into the workplace, organisations can take meaningful steps toward supporting employee wellbeing, reducing stigma, and fostering open conversations around menopause.  The sessions not only provide practical tools and knowledge, but also help build a sense of community and connection among colleagues.
