Chris Speck is a former Fitmums runner, a teacher, and a novelist based in Hull.
He joined Fitmums back in 2017. At the time, he’d been running solo for about a year and had made some progress but not loads. As a self-proclaimed “former fat kid” at secondary school, Chris had always felt like sport wasn’t for him, and that sporty people were his natural enemies. Fitmums and Friends helped change that. From his very first session, he felt like he’d found his people - others who wanted to keep fit and enjoy life, without judgement. And now running helps him be a better writer!
Fitmums & Friends helped him run further than ever before. They taught him to keep his head up on the hills (thanks, Mike!) and gave him the support he needed to train for his first 10K. He especially liked the shepherding system and never felt like he’d get left behind.
These days, Chris still runs five times a week. He loves it. He says he wouldn’t be able to write the way he does without the focus and calm that running brings. While he no longer runs in a group, he’s clear he wouldn’t have stuck with it if it weren’t for the support of others at the start.
Fitmums & Friends even gets a little nod in a couple of his books, and many of his characters are runners. When researching locations for his novels, Chris often runs the surrounding areas to get a feel for them. “You see things when you run that you never would in a car,” he says.
Chris Speck’s latest series, Avenue Cars, are gangland thrillers set in a taxi office on Chanterlands Ave.
