New Dragon Boat programme launches to support people affected by breast cancer

Posted 22nd April 2026

Fitmums and Friends is proud to announce the launch of an exciting new Dragon Boat programme designed to support people affected by breast cancer. Delivered by Fitmums and Friends in partnership with HER Breast Friends and Welton Waters Adventure Centre, the new initiative offers a fun, supportive and empowering way to be active while connecting with others who understand the breast cancer journey.

Thanks to generous funding from Hull Trinity House Charity and CHCP Foundation, the programme has been able to purchase two brand new Dragon Boats, proudly named HOPE and HARMONY.

Research has shown that dragon boat paddling can offer significant benefits following breast cancer treatment, helping improve strength, mobility, confidence and wellbeing. The paddling action may also help enhance lymph flow, which can support the body’s natural systems. Importantly, the programme is open to anyone affected by breast cancer — not just women — and welcomes all abilities and fitness levels.

Sessions take place twice a month on Saturdays from 11.00am to 12.30pm at the Sailing Club, Welton Waters Adventure Centre.

The Fitmums and Friends team delivering the sessions are all dedicated volunteers, with the boat helms having completed a specialist two-day training course to qualify for their roles.

All sessions are free to attend, although donations are warmly welcomed to help sustain and grow the programme in the future.

Participants should ensure they have appropriate medical consent to take part, particularly if treatment has been recent. We ask individuals to make this check themselves before attending.

Those joining a session should wear comfortable active clothing and dress in layers suitable for the weather. It can be windy on the water, so warm clothing is strongly recommended, along with spare clothes in case anyone gets wet.

Family members are very welcome to come along in support. If space allows, they may also have the opportunity to get on the water, although priority will always be given to those affected by breast cancer.

Parking at the Sailing Club is limited, so car sharing is strongly encouraged. By kind agreement, participants can meet at Aldi in Brough, park there, and share the short five-minute journey to the lake. Please meet at 10.40am, ready to leave by 10.50am.

There is also a café on site, so visitors may wish to bring some change to enjoy a cuppa, cake and chat after the session.

Anyone feeling anxious about attending is encouraged to get in touch. A member of the team can arrange a phone call beforehand and/or meet participants outside the venue on arrival.
