Why Strength and Conditioning Matters – For Movement, for Life
At Fitmums and Friends, we’re passionate about helping people stay active through running, walking, nordic walking, cycling, and more – but there’s another crucial piece of the puzzle that often gets overlooked: strength and conditioning.
Whether you're heading out for a run, enjoying a walk, cycling to work, or simply lifting shopping bags or gardening, your body relies on strong, stable muscles and joints to move well and avoid injury.
Why Is Strength and Conditioning So Important?
Strength and conditioning (S&C) involves exercises designed to improve muscle strength, joint stability, balance, and flexibility. This isn't just about lifting heavy weights (although this has been shown to have great benefits too) – it's about helping your body move better and more efficiently in everyday life.
For runners, walkers, and cyclists, a well-rounded S&C routine:
• Improves performance – stronger muscles mean more power and endurance.
• Reduces risk of injury – by correcting muscle imbalances and supporting joints.
• Aids recovery – keeping muscles resilient and less prone to strain.
• Helps you stay active for longer – by building a more robust body, you can enjoy your favourite activities – running, walking, cycling – well into later life, with less risk of setbacks or injury.
This means more years of running, walking, cycling – and doing it with confidence and comfort.
Everyday Benefits
The benefits go far beyond sport. S&C also supports everyday tasks like:
• Reducing aches and pains from long hours at a desk or laptop
• Carrying groceries without strain
• Bending and lifting in the garden
• Sitting and standing with better posture
A Special Note for Women in Midlife and Beyond
Strength training becomes even more important for women going through menopause, when the natural decline in oestrogen can lead to muscle loss, reduced bone density, and joint stiffness. Incorporating strength-based movement helps:
• Maintain muscle mass and bone strength
• Support hormonal balance and mood
• Boost energy, confidence and quality of life
It’s one of the most powerful tools for staying strong, mobile and independent in later life.
